Covid-19 could cost Africa R80 billion in crop exports

June 13, 2020

The livelihood of almost 10 million farmers could be affected.

According to McKinsey & Co, more than R80 billion will be lost in crop exports in Africa. This, in turn, will likely lead to 10 million farmers that will suffer a loss in terms of their livelihoods. Disruptions ranging from cancelled flights to the closure of chocolate factories in Europe have limited exports of crops ranging from nuts to roses, according to the consultancy firm. Livelihoods will be effected through “job loss or price reductions”.
