Equal Education takes Depart of Basic Education to court over feeding schemes

June 15, 2020

They want school feeding schemes to be allowed so that learners from all grades can visit schools to get food.

Normally, the National Schools Nutrition Programme provides meals to over 9 million pupils a day. Since the hard lockdown in March, the feeding scheme ground to a halt, as learners were not allowed to visit schools to collect food. Equal Education has now launched court proceedings against the Department of Basic Education to get school feeding schemes up and running again. Equal Education is basing their case on the fact that without these feeding schemes, many learners will have their food security jeopardised and that this is against their constitutional right to nutritious food. Currently, the feeding schemes are running for grade 12 and 7 learners, who are back at school. The organisation, however, wants the court to allow feeding schemes to feed all learners, no matter which grade they are in.
