South Africa is currently on stage 2 of the loadshedding schedule.
A major incident in Zambia has led to continued load shedding in South Africa. Throughout this week, the country will have rolling blackouts according to stage 2 of the load shedding schedule.
What’s more is that the power utility has already warned citizens that the country could be plunged into a higher stage of load shedding if even the slightest further breakdown occurs.
“Regretfully, due to the ongoing insufficient generation capacity and the inability to replenish emergency reserves over this weekend, Stage 2 load shedding will continue throughout next week from 05:00 on Monday 8 November until 05:00 on Saturday 13 November,” spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said.
He said a “major incident” in Zambia on Saturday had affected the entire Southern African power pool. Imported power from Cahora Bassa reduced by 1 000 MW, while a Tutuka generator also tripped.
To add insult to injury, at least three power units at some of the country’s biggest electricity stations tripped on Sunday. Diesel supplies are also getting scarce, which stacks the odds even more against ESKOM’s ability to keep the lights on.
Total breakdowns currently amount to 16 693MW while planned maintenance is 5 769MW of capacity.
“Since the power system remains volatile and unpredictable, higher stages of load shedding may be required,” Mantshantsha said.
