The move is part of their long-time plan to introduce gaming features to their platform.
It has been rumoured for some time that Netflix really wants to add gaming features to its platform. Now, they have gone official with their plans after they purchased a gaming studio. Netflix acquired Night School – the studio that developed Oxenfree. According to reports, the streaming platform plans to roll out its gaming offerings in Europe first.
A few weeks ago, Netflix started testing the new features in parts of Poland. Selected users got access to a series of games based on their series. Among the selection were games based on the very successful Stranger Things series.
Previously, Night School only developed games for consoles and PC. It is the first gaming company to be acquired by Netflix and it will see Night School pivot into the mobile gaming sector, seeing as Netflix has quite a strong foothold in the mobile sector.
It seems like the strategy to add gaming options to their platform is a move to increase subscribers, instead of offering more value to existing users. Netflix hopes to create curiously among gamers and entertainment lovers alike and that will encourage them to join the streaming service.
The gaming offering will be completely free-to-use for subscribers and free of any in-app ads, something that Netflix has been better at guaranteeing than certain competitors.
“Like our shows and films, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix membership — all with no ads and no in-app purchases,” the company says in a statement.
It is not yet clear when the features will be rolled out to the rest of the world after successfully launching in Europe.
